The Reader Writer Collective was born from my own experience as a parent.

Over the years, I've sat in meetings, attended assessments, completed forms, asked questions and advocated for support. Like many families, I've experienced the worry that comes with wanting your child to be able to demonstrate what they know and wondering whether the right support will be available when they need it.

​

What I noticed was something incredibly simple.

When a student no longer has to use their mental energy decoding words, managing handwriting, spelling, organising thoughts on paper or juggling all of those things at once, something changes.

​

They can focus on the thinking.

I've seen students go from looking completely overwhelmed and unsure where to start, to confidently sharing what they know.

​

It's like night and day.

The knowledge was always there.

The ideas were always there.

The barrier was getting those ideas from their brain onto the page.

​

At the same time, I've seen the incredible work schools do every day to ensure students have the support they need to demonstrate what they know.
 

How many people who have made it through the education system, built careers, raised families and learned life's lessons would be willing to give a few hours of their time to help a young person realise what they're capable of?

​

That question became the foundation of The Reader Writer Collective. Because every student deserves access to the reader and writer support they have been approved to receive and every young person deserves the opportunity to discover what they are capable of.
